Leadership Authority

To know where you get your leadership authority from, you must look in the Bible. Romans 13:1 clearly and explicitly states that all authority comes from God.

It’s not about you and your position, title, or your responsibilities. It’s recognizing that the authority that you have as a leader starts and ends with God.

So if all authority is from God then several things must be true about being a leader:

1. You must be a servant to those that you Lead. Jesus was a great servant. He washed his disciples feet. Jesus came to serve not to be served. Even this lowly task was not beneath the son of God himself. This expression of humility is at the core of being a servant.

2. You must love those you lead. Since God is love you must show love as a leader. That means you must care for those you are responsible for. You have to watch out for their well-being, and always have their best interests in mind, even when it might not make sense from a business standpoint.

3. Your job might give you responsibilities, but only God gives you authority. Your responsibilities as a leader must not be confused with your authority, which comes from God. At your job, you have to make sure that customers are serviced, and other job tasks are completed. But only God can give you the wisdom and power to lead others.

I could probably toss in a few subcategories, but humbly serving with love as unto Christ by the grace of God pretty much sums it up!

  2. Dan Black says:

Great points. It’s essential to remember God is our authority even though we might be a leader or manager.

Leaders need to show grace to others. When others fail or makes mistakes a leader needs to respond with grace and mercy. Great post and reminder.

  3. “Your job might give you responsibilities, but only God gives you authority”
That’s a good one. I had never quite thought of it like that.
